Kilt

A kilt is a knee-length garment, usually pleated and wrapped around the waist, traditionally associated with Scottish Highland dress.

Great kilt: A large length of woolen cloth worn as both a lower garment and an upper-body wrap in the Scottish Highlands. Its full-length cloth is an earlier form from which the modern tailored kilt developed.
Belted plaid: A large woolen garment gathered and belted around the body, worn in the Scottish Highlands before tailored kilts became common. It is generally recognized as the predecessor of the modern kilt.
Scottish Highland dress: A formal style of Scottish clothing that includes garments and accessories associated with Highland tradition. The kilt is its central garment, worn with coordinated accessories.
Fustanella: A pleated, skirt-like garment worn as traditional dress in parts of Greece and the Balkans. Its pleats invite comparison, but its construction and regional history differ from the kilt’s.
Tartan: A patterned textile made of intersecting horizontal and vertical bands of contrasting colors. Tartan is the fabric pattern most closely associated with kilts.
Highland Clearances: The forced displacement of many Scottish Highland tenants from the late eighteenth through the nineteenth centuries. The social upheaval reshaped Highland life and the later meaning of its dress.
Scottish regiments: Military units raised in Scotland or associated with Scottish identity and traditions. Several regiments adopted kilts as distinctive uniform dress.
Sarong: A length of cloth wrapped around the waist or body as a garment in parts of Asia and the Pacific. Both wrap around the waist, but the sarong is not defined by tailored pleats.
Knife pleat: A narrow, overlapping pleat folded consistently in one direction. Knife pleats are a common way to shape the back of a kilt.
Dress Act 1746: A British law that restricted Highland clothing in Scotland after the Jacobite rising of 1745. Its ban and repeal made Highland dress a charged emblem of identity.
