Knowra Kim Dae-jung Kim Dae-jung Kim Dae-jung was a South Korean opposition leader and president from 1998 to 2003. He received the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize for work toward democracy and reconciliation with North Korea.
Park Chung Hee : South Korean president who ruled from 1963 until his assassination in 1979. Park's authoritarian government imprisoned Kim and made him a leading opposition figure.
Sunshine Policy : South Korea's policy of engagement with North Korea, pursued under Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun. Kim's signature approach sought dialogue, exchange, and reduced confrontation with the North.

May 16 coup : The 1961 military coup in South Korea led by Park Chung Hee. The coup began the authoritarian political order against which Kim organized.
Six-party talks : Multilateral negotiations involving North Korea, South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, and the United States over North Korea's nuclear program. Later diplomacy addressed security disputes that bilateral engagement under Kim did not resolve.
