Kinetoscope

An early motion-picture viewing device that showed a short film to one person at a time through a peephole. Its rapid display of sequential photographs created the illusion of movement.

Kinetograph: A motion-picture camera developed by Thomas Edison’s laboratory to record images on film. It produced the films that the Kinetoscope displayed.
Thomas Edison: An American inventor and businessman whose laboratories developed numerous electrical and recording technologies. He backed the Kinetoscope project and helped shape its commercial development.
Kinetoscope parlor: A commercial venue containing coin-operated Kinetoscopes for individual film viewing. These parlors turned the device into a public entertainment business.
Cinématographe: A motion-picture camera, printer, and projector developed by the Lumière brothers. Unlike the peephole Kinetoscope, it projected films for groups watching together.
Edison film strip: A perforated strip of celluloid film used in early Edison motion-picture cameras and viewers. Its sprocket holes let the Kinetoscope pull images through its viewing mechanism.
William Kennedy Dickson: A Scottish-born inventor and filmmaker who led much of Edison’s early motion-picture work. Dickson designed key parts of the Kinetograph and Kinetoscope systems.
Black Maria: A small, rotating film-production building constructed at Edison’s West Orange laboratory. Its films supplied early Kinetoscope programs.
Vitascope: A film projector marketed in the United States in the mid-1890s. Its projected images offered a public alternative to the Kinetoscope’s individual viewing.
Persistence of vision: The perceptual effect in which successive visual stimuli seem continuous rather than separate. Rapidly presented film frames appeared as continuous motion.
Zoopraxiscope: An 1870s device that projected moving images traced from photographs onto a screen. It was an earlier motion-study system that helped establish the idea of animated photographic sequences.
