Kingdom of Aragon

A medieval Christian kingdom centered in northeastern Iberia, formed in the eleventh century and later one of the principal territories of the Crown of Aragon.

County of Aragon: A Pyrenean county that emerged under Frankish influence and became the core of the later Kingdom of Aragon. The kingdom grew from this earlier county, whose name and territory it inherited.
Peter I of Aragon: King of Aragon and Pamplona from 1094 to 1104, who captured Huesca and Barbastro. His reign secured major southern gains during Aragon's expansion.
Battle of Alcoraz: A battle near Huesca in 1096 in which Aragonese forces defeated the taifa of Zaragoza. The victory helped Peter I capture Huesca and extend royal control southward.
Petronilla of Aragon: Queen of Aragon from 1157 to 1164, whose marriage to Ramon Berenguer IV joined the Aragonese and Barcelona dynasties. Her succession preserved the kingdom's dynastic identity within the new composite monarchy.
Ramiro I of Aragon: The first king of Aragon, ruling from 1035 until 1063. His inheritance from the Kingdom of Navarre established Aragon as a separate kingdom.
Alfonso I of Aragon: King of Aragon and Pamplona from 1104 to 1134, known as Alfonso the Battler. His conquest of Zaragoza in 1118 shifted the kingdom's center of gravity southward.
Conquest of Huesca: The capture of Huesca by Peter I of Aragon in 1096 after a prolonged siege. The city became a key stronghold in the kingdom's southern expansion.
Ramon Berenguer IV: Count of Barcelona from 1131 to 1162 and prince of Aragon through his marriage to Petronilla. His rule linked Aragon's royal dynasty with the County of Barcelona.
Sancho III of Navarre: A king of Navarre whose realm dominated much of Christian Iberia in the early eleventh century. His partition of the realm gave his son Ramiro the lands that became Aragon.
Conquest of Zaragoza: The capture of Zaragoza by Alfonso I of Aragon in 1118 during the Christian expansion into al-Andalus. The city became a major political and urban center within the expanding kingdom.
