Kingdom of Castile

A medieval and early modern Iberian kingdom that became the largest component of the Crown of Castile and a foundation of the Spanish monarchy.

County of Castile: A medieval county in the eastern Kingdom of León that developed into the Kingdom of Castile. Its emergence as an independent kingdom began when the county separated from León in the eleventh century.
Cortes of Castile: Assemblies of representatives of cities, clergy, and nobility summoned by Castilian rulers. The Cortes negotiated taxation and presented petitions to the crown.
Ferdinand III of Castile: King of Castile from 1217 and of León from 1230 until his death in 1252. His conquest of Córdoba and Seville greatly enlarged Castilian territory.

Crown of Aragon: A composite monarchy of territories including Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia, united under a shared ruler. Its separate institutions show why the union with Castile did not create a single centralized state.
Alfonso VI of León and Castile: King of León and Castile who captured Toledo in 1085. His reign extended Castilian power southward and made Toledo a royal center.
Alfonso X of Castile: King of Castile and León from 1252 to 1284, known for legal, scholarly, and literary projects. His court sponsored the Siete Partidas and a wide-ranging program of royal learning.
