Kingdom of Cyprus

The Kingdom of Cyprus was a medieval state established after Richard I of England conquered the island in 1191. Ruled by the Lusignan dynasty, it lasted until Venice annexed Cyprus in 1489.

Richard I of England: King of England from 1189 to 1199, known as Richard the Lionheart. He captured Cyprus during the Third Crusade in 1191.
Feudalism: A set of medieval political and economic relationships organized around landholding, service, and personal obligations. Lusignan kings distributed land and offices through feudal relationships.

Hugh III of Cyprus: King of Cyprus from 1267 and king of Jerusalem from 1268, from the Lusignan dynasty. He reunited the crowns of Cyprus and Jerusalem after a disputed succession.
Fall of Acre: The Mamluk conquest of Acre in 1291, ending the principal surviving crusader stronghold on the Levantine coast. After Acre fell, Cyprus became the chief base for Latin Christian power in the eastern Mediterranean.
Guy of Lusignan: A French nobleman who became king of Jerusalem in 1186 and Cyprus in 1192. He received Cyprus after losing the kingdom of Jerusalem.
Latin Church: The western branch of Christianity governed by the pope and using Latin in its liturgy. The crown supported Latin ecclesiastical institutions alongside Cyprus's older Orthodox church.
