Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria

A Habsburg crown land established in 1772 across parts of present-day Poland and Ukraine, it remained under Austrian rule until the empire’s collapse in 1918.

First Partition of Poland: The 1772 division of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth territory among Russia, Prussia, and Austria. Austria annexed the lands that became Galicia during this partition.
Austrian Empire: The Habsburg-ruled empire established in 1804 and transformed into Austria-Hungary in 1867. Galicia was governed within this state from 1804 to 1867.
Francis Joseph I: Austrian emperor from 1848 to 1916 and king of Hungary from 1867 to 1916. His long reign encompassed Galicia’s autonomy and its final decades under Habsburg rule.

Congress Poland: A Polish kingdom created in 1815 and initially linked by personal union to the Russian Empire. It was a neighboring partition-era Polish territory under Russian, not Habsburg, rule.
Polish-Ukrainian relations: The political and cultural relations between Polish and Ukrainian communities and states. Competing national claims in Galicia became a lasting source of tension.
