Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia

A medieval East Slavic state centered in Galicia and Volhynia, in present-day western Ukraine. It emerged in the late 12th century and ended as an independent polity in the 14th century.

Principality of Galicia: A medieval East Slavic principality centered on Halych, in present-day western Ukraine. Its ruling dynasty and territory formed the western core of the united state.
Daniel of Galicia: A 13th-century ruler of Galicia–Volhynia who was crowned king in 1253. He rebuilt princely power after Mongol conquest and pursued alliances across Europe.
Mstislav Mstislavich: A prominent Rus’ prince who ruled Galicia in the early 13th century. His control of Galicia preceded Roman the Great’s reunification of the region.
Kingdom of Poland: A medieval monarchy in Central Europe that became a major power under the Piast and Jagiellonian dynasties. Polish rulers competed for Galicia after the local dynasty’s extinction.
Principality of Volhynia: A medieval East Slavic principality in the Volhynia region of present-day Ukraine. Its lands and princely line supplied the state’s other principal territorial base.
Mongol invasion of Rus': The 13th-century Mongol campaigns that conquered and devastated many East Slavic lands. The invasion forced Galicia–Volhynia to acknowledge Mongol supremacy while retaining local rule.
Lev I of Galicia: A 13th-century prince of Galicia–Volhynia and son of Daniel of Galicia. He shifted the political center toward Lviv and extended the dynasty’s influence.
Grand Duchy of Lithuania: A medieval state that expanded across much of eastern Europe and later formed a union with Poland. Lithuanian rulers gained Volhynian lands during the struggle over Galicia–Volhynia’s succession.
Roman the Great: A prince of Galicia and Volhynia who united the two principalities in 1199. His union established the polity that became Galicia–Volhynia.
Golden Horde: A Mongol state that ruled much of the western Eurasian steppe from the 13th to 15th centuries. Its khans exerted overlordship over Galicia–Volhynia after the Mongol conquest.
