Kingdom of God

God’s sovereign rule over creation, understood in Christianity as already present in the world and awaiting future fulfillment.

Eschatology: Theological reflection on death, final destiny, and the fulfillment of history. The kingdom’s future completion is a central Christian expectation about history’s end.
Sovereignty of God: The theological claim that God exercises ultimate authority over creation and history. The kingdom is God’s active rule, not merely a territory or political institution.
Parables of Jesus: Short illustrative stories Jesus used to teach about God, human conduct, and the kingdom. Many parables describe the kingdom through images of growth, invitation, and judgment.
Realized eschatology: The view that major end-time promises are fulfilled in the present through Jesus. It stresses the kingdom’s present reality more strongly than its still-future fulfillment.
Beatitudes: Teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount that describe those called blessed. They portray the values and people associated with life under God’s reign.
Covenant: A binding relationship established through promises and obligations between parties. Biblical hopes for God’s reign draw on covenant promises to Israel.
Sermon on the Mount: A collection of Jesus’ teachings in Matthew concerning discipleship and life before God. Its commands sketch conduct suited to the kingdom Jesus announces.
Consistent eschatology: The view that Jesus’ message centered on an imminent future divine intervention. It locates the kingdom primarily in the future rather than in present experience.
Lord's Prayer: A prayer taught by Jesus that asks for God’s name to be honored and God’s kingdom to come. Its petition for the kingdom to come expresses the hope that divine rule will be fully realized.
Messiah: An anointed deliverer expected in Jewish tradition and identified by Christians with Jesus. Many kingdom expectations concern the messianic ruler and the deliverance associated with him.
