Kingdom of Hungary

A Central European kingdom founded around the turn of the eleventh century, it endured in changing forms until 1918 and became Austria-Hungary’s Hungarian component in 1867.

Stephen I of Hungary: The first king of Hungary, crowned around the year 1000, who established Christian royal rule. His coronation and institutions are conventionally associated with the kingdom’s foundation.
Hungarian Diet: The representative assembly of the Hungarian estates, responsible for legislation, taxation, and political negotiation. The estates’ assembly constrained royal rule and became central to constitutional government.
Ottoman Hungary: The portions of the former Hungarian kingdom ruled directly by the Ottoman Empire from the sixteenth to the late seventeenth century. Ottoman occupation divided the kingdom among competing powers after Mohács.
Louis II of Hungary: The Jagiellonian king of Hungary and Bohemia who died at the Battle of Mohács in 1526. His death left the crown disputed as Ottoman power advanced into the kingdom.
Hungarian irredentism: Political movements seeking to revise Hungary’s postwar borders and reclaim territories lost after World War I. Memory of the kingdom’s former extent became a major source of revisionist politics.
Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin: The late ninth-century settlement of Magyar groups in the Carpathian Basin. It established the territorial and political setting from which the kingdom emerged.
Holy Crown of Hungary: The coronation crown and constitutional symbol associated with the legitimacy of Hungary’s kingship. The crown embodied continuity of the kingdom beyond any individual monarch.
Royal Hungary: The Habsburg-ruled western and northern territories of the former Kingdom of Hungary after 1526. It preserved a Hungarian kingdom under Habsburg rule while central lands were Ottoman-ruled.
Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor: A Habsburg ruler elected king of Hungary after the death of Louis II. His contested succession initiated enduring Habsburg rule over Royal Hungary.
Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye: The 1919 peace treaty that recognized Austria’s reduced postwar borders and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. It formed part of the settlement that ended the monarchy containing the Hungarian kingdom.
