Kingdom of Ireland

The Kingdom of Ireland was a monarchy established in 1542 under the English Crown and ruled by the English, later British, monarch. It was united with Great Britain in 1801 to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

Crown of Ireland Act 1542: An act of the Irish Parliament that declared Henry VIII and his successors kings of Ireland. It formally established the kingdom and gave Henry VIII the title of king of Ireland.
Parliament of Ireland: The legislature of the Kingdom of Ireland, comprising the Irish House of Lords and House of Commons. It passed laws for the kingdom, though English authorities increasingly constrained its powers.
Plantation of Ulster: A seventeenth-century settlement that transferred land in Ulster to English and Scottish Protestant settlers. It altered landholding and religious demographics under the kingdom’s expanding royal authority.
Acts of Union 1800: Parallel British and Irish statutes that united the Kingdom of Ireland with Great Britain from 1801. They dissolved the kingdom as a separate polity and created a single United Kingdom.
Lordship of Ireland: The medieval territory in Ireland ruled by the English monarch through a lord deputy and local institutions. The kingdom replaced this earlier form of English royal rule in Ireland.
Lord Lieutenant of Ireland: The monarch’s chief representative in Ireland, also known as the viceroy. The office represented royal authority and directed much of the kingdom’s administration.
Irish Rebellion of 1641: An uprising in Ireland that began in 1641 amid political, religious, and land conflicts. It triggered years of warfare and intensified distrust between Catholic and Protestant communities.
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland: The state formed in 1801 by the union of Great Britain and Ireland, lasting until the partition of Ireland. It succeeded the Kingdom of Ireland and placed Irish representation within a united parliament.
Henry VIII: King of England from 1509 to 1547, whose break with Rome reshaped English government and religion. He secured the Irish Parliament’s recognition of his royal title in 1542.
Irish Privy Council: A council of senior officials and advisers that assisted the executive government of Ireland. It advised the lord lieutenant and helped administer the kingdom under royal authority.
