Kingdom of Italy

A medieval kingdom centered on northern and central Italy, contested by Carolingian and later rulers. Its kingship often overlapped with rule over other territories and depended on alliances with powerful regional elites.

Kingdom of the Lombards: A Germanic kingdom that ruled much of Italy from the sixth century until Charlemagne conquered it in 774. Its former territory became the core of the Frankish kingdom in Italy.
Holy Roman Emperor: The ruler who held the elective imperial title in the medieval and early modern Holy Roman Empire. From Otto I onward, the imperial title was closely tied to kingship in Italy.
