Kingdom of Jerusalem

A Crusader state established in the Levant after the First Crusade, ruled by Latin Christian kings from 1099 until the fall of Acre in 1291.

Acre: A coastal city in the Levant that served as the Crusader kingdom’s principal stronghold and last capital. Its fall in 1291 ended the kingdom’s mainland rule.
First Crusade: A military expedition launched in 1096 that captured Jerusalem in 1099. Its conquest created the conditions for a Latin kingdom in the Levant.
Melisende of Jerusalem: Queen of Jerusalem who ruled jointly with her son Baldwin III and later exercised power in her own right. Her political authority shaped a major succession crisis and its settlement.
Battle of Hattin: A decisive 1187 battle in which Saladin’s forces defeated the kingdom’s field army. The defeat opened the way for Jerusalem’s capture.
Third Crusade: A campaign launched after Jerusalem fell to Saladin in 1187, led by rulers including Richard I of England. It restored parts of the kingdom’s coast but not Jerusalem.
Crusader states: Latin Christian polities established in the eastern Mediterranean during and after the Crusades. Jerusalem was the largest and most enduring of these states.
Siege of Jerusalem (1099): The First Crusade’s siege and capture of Jerusalem in July 1099. The city’s capture became the kingdom’s founding event.
Baldwin IV of Jerusalem: King of Jerusalem from 1174 to 1185, known as the Leper King. His illness and contested succession weakened the kingdom before Hattin.
Siege of Jerusalem (1187): Saladin’s siege that ended with Jerusalem’s surrender in October 1187. Its outcome deprived the kingdom of its namesake capital.
Kingdom of Cyprus: A medieval kingdom on Cyprus ruled by the Lusignan dynasty from 1192 to 1489. After mainland defeats, Jerusalem’s kingship continued in exile on Cyprus.
