Kingdom of Libya

The Kingdom of Libya was an independent state ruled by King Idris from 1951 until Muammar Gaddafi’s coup in 1969. It united Cyrenaica, Tripolitania, and Fezzan under a federal monarchy before becoming a unitary state.

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 289: A 1949 resolution directing that Libya become independent no later than 1 January 1952. It set the international timetable for the kingdom’s independence.
Constitution of Libya (1951): The constitution that established Libya as a hereditary monarchy with parliamentary institutions and federal government. It defined the kingdom’s initial political framework.
