Kingdom of Loango

The Kingdom of Loango was a precolonial state on the Atlantic coast of Central Africa, centered in present-day Republic of the Congo and closely associated with the Vili people.

Vili people: A Central African people historically associated with the Kingdom of Loango and the Loango coast. Vili communities formed the kingdom’s core population and sustained its coastal political and commercial networks.
Mâ Loango: The royal title of the ruler of the Kingdom of Loango. The Mâ Loango embodied kingship, but governed within a political order that also relied on local authorities.
Loango trade: The regional and overseas commerce conducted through the Kingdom of Loango and its coastal ports. Trade connected Loango’s inland partners and coastal communities to Atlantic shipping.

Teke people: A Central African people whose historical kingdoms and communities occupied areas inland from the Loango coast. Teke political communities were among the inland neighbors connected to Loango through trade and regional diplomacy.
Cabinda: A coastal region and exclave of Angola, north of the mouth of the Congo River. Cabinda lay within the wider Loango cultural and commercial sphere and became a major site of European trade.
