Kingdom of Pontus

The Kingdom of Pontus was a Hellenistic state on the southern coast of the Black Sea, ruled by the Mithridatic dynasty from the third to first centuries BCE.

Mithridatic dynasty: A dynasty that ruled Pontus from its foundation until its annexation by Rome. Its rulers turned Pontus into a major Hellenistic power.
Mithridates VI Eupator: The Pontic king who fought Rome in three major wars between 89 and 63 BCE. His expansion and resistance defined Pontus’s final decades.
Mithridatic Wars: A series of three wars between Rome and Mithridates VI of Pontus from 89 to 63 BCE. The wars brought the kingdom’s conflict with Rome to its decisive end.
Roman Republic: The Roman state governed by elected magistrates and assemblies before the establishment of imperial rule. Its eastern expansion absorbed Pontic lands and ended the kingdom’s sovereignty.
Mithridates I of Pontus: The founder of the Pontic kingdom, who ruled in the late fourth and early third centuries BCE. He established the dynasty and state from which Pontus grew.
Pharnaces II of Pontus: A son of Mithridates VI who briefly ruled Pontus and other territories after rebelling against Rome. His defeat at Zela ended a short attempt to restore his father’s power.

Lucullus: A Roman commander and statesman who led campaigns against Mithridates VI. His victories drove Mithridates from much of Pontus.
