Kingdom of Romania

The Kingdom of Romania was a constitutional monarchy in southeastern Europe from 1881 until the monarchy’s abolition in 1947. Its borders and political system changed markedly through two world wars.

Romanian War of Independence: The 1877–1878 conflict in which Romania fought alongside Russia against the Ottoman Empire and secured international recognition of independence. Independence in this war preceded the kingdom’s proclamation in 1881.
Constitution of Romania (1923): Romania’s interwar constitution, adopted in 1923, which established a parliamentary constitutional monarchy and expanded citizenship and suffrage provisions. It set the formal rules for the kingdom during its interwar democratic period.
Carol I of Romania: Romania’s first king, who ruled as prince from 1866 and as king from 1881 until his death in 1914. His reign bridged the principality and the newly proclaimed kingdom.
Treaty of Trianon: The 1920 peace treaty that confirmed Hungary’s postwar borders, including the transfer of Transylvania to Romania. It internationally confirmed a major territorial gain for the kingdom.
Romanian principality under Ottoman suzerainty: The pre-independence Romanian principality, internally self-governing but formally under Ottoman suzerainty. It contrasts with the kingdom’s internationally recognized sovereignty after 1878.
Great Union: The 1918 unification of Bessarabia, Bukovina, and Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania. The union created the enlarged state known as Greater Romania.
Parliament of Romania: Romania’s national legislature, consisting of elected chambers under the kingdom’s parliamentary constitutional system. Parliament shared legislative authority with the king under constitutional rule.
Principality of Romania: The Romanian state formed by the 1859 union of Moldavia and Wallachia, which became the Kingdom of Romania in 1881. The kingdom emerged when this principality adopted royal status.
Treaty of Craiova: The 1940 treaty by which Romania ceded Southern Dobruja to Bulgaria. The loss was part of the territorial crisis that destabilized the kingdom.
Romania under Nicolae Ceaușescu: The communist dictatorship led by Nicolae Ceaușescu in Romania from 1965 to 1989. Its centralized communist rule differed from the kingdom’s constitutional order and dynastic state.
