Kingdom of Sikkim

A Himalayan monarchy ruled by the Chogyal dynasty from the 17th century until Sikkim became an Indian state in 1975.

Phuntsog Namgyal: The first Chogyal of Sikkim, enthroned in 1642. His enthronement established the Namgyal dynasty and the kingdom’s monarchy.
Tashi Namgyal: The Chogyal who ruled Sikkim from 1914 to 1963. His long reign spanned the transition from British protection to Indian independence.
Sikkim State Congress: A political party formed in 1947 that campaigned for democratic reforms in Sikkim. Its demands challenged the kingdom’s restricted political system.
British Raj: The system of British Crown rule over India from 1858 to 1947. British authority expanded over Sikkim without initially replacing its Chogyal.
Chogyal: A monarchic title meaning “Dharma King,” used by rulers of Sikkim and other Himalayan polities. The Sikkimese kingship was embodied in this title.
Palden Thondup Namgyal: The last Chogyal of Sikkim, who reigned from 1963 until the monarchy’s abolition in 1975. His reign ended when Sikkim joined India as a state.
Sikkimese monarchy referendum: The April 1975 vote in which Sikkim’s electorate approved abolishing the monarchy and joining India. The referendum supplied the political basis for ending Chogyal rule.
Kingdom of Bhutan: A Himalayan monarchy that has remained sovereign while developing constitutional government. Bhutan offers a neighboring case of monarchy continuing rather than ending through incorporation into India.
Namgyal dynasty: A Himalayan royal dynasty that ruled Sikkim from its founding until the monarchy ended in 1975. Its rulers governed Sikkim across the kingdom’s three-century history.
Hope Cooke: An American-born socialite who married Crown Prince Palden Thondup Namgyal in 1963. Her marriage brought international attention to the Sikkimese royal family.
