Kinji Fukasaku

Kinji Fukasaku (1930–2003) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter known for fast-paced crime films, including the yakuza series Battles Without Honor and Humanity and the dystopian thriller Battle Royale.

Battles Without Honor and Humanity: A 1973 Japanese crime film depicting postwar yakuza conflict in Hiroshima. This landmark film established Fukasaku’s influential, documentary-like approach to yakuza violence.
Documentary-style filmmaking: A filmmaking approach that borrows documentary techniques to create an impression of observed reality. Fukasaku used handheld camerawork and rough textures to give gang conflict an eyewitness quality.
