Kit Carson

Kit Carson (1809–1868) was an American frontiersman, explorer, guide, and soldier. He helped extend U.S. power across the Southwest and led campaigns that dispossessed Indigenous peoples.

John C. Frémont: An American explorer, politician, and military officer who led expeditions across the West. Carson guided Frémont’s western expeditions and became widely known through their published accounts.
Frémont expedition: A series of U.S. exploring expeditions across the American West led by John C. Frémont in the 1840s. Carson’s guiding work on these journeys made him famous and advanced U.S. territorial knowledge.
Navajo people: An Indigenous people of the American Southwest, with a distinct language, culture, and political history. Carson’s campaign devastated Navajo communities and drove survivors into forced exile.
Buffalo Bill: The stage name of William F. Cody, an American scout and showman who popularized frontier spectacles. Cody’s performances helped turn Carson into a celebrated character in frontier entertainment.
Narbona: A prominent Navajo leader who opposed U.S. expansion and was killed by American troops in 1849. Carson’s troops were involved in the encounter in which Narbona was killed.
Mexican–American War: A war between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848 that transferred vast territories to U.S. control. Carson carried messages and served as a guide during the war’s campaigns in the Southwest.
Mescalero Apache: An Apache people whose homelands span parts of present-day New Mexico and Texas. Carson’s military operations helped remove Mescalero Apache people to Bosque Redondo.
The Battle of Little Bighorn: An 1876 battle in which Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho forces defeated the U.S. Seventh Cavalry. It exemplifies a later phase of Indigenous resistance, after Carson’s death and distinct from his campaigns.
James H. Carleton: A U.S. Army officer who commanded campaigns against Indigenous peoples in the Southwest. Carleton ordered Carson’s 1863–1864 campaign against the Navajo.
Long Walk of the Navajo: The forced relocation of thousands of Navajo people to Bosque Redondo in 1864. Carson’s scorched-earth campaign helped force Navajo families to surrender and begin this deportation.
