Klangfarbenmelodie

Klangfarbenmelodie is a musical idea in which changing instrumental timbres articulate a melodic line, so color shifts help shape the melody.

Orchestration: The practice of assigning musical material to instruments and balancing their combined sound. It provides the practical means for changing timbre along a melodic line.
Arnold Schoenberg: An Austrian composer and theorist who developed atonality and the twelve-tone method. He named Klangfarbenmelodie while considering whether timbre could organize music like pitch.
Anton Webern: An Austrian composer whose concise works helped shape modernist and serial music. His sparse instrumental writing is frequently associated with melodic lines distributed by timbre.
Melodic fragmentation: The division of a melody into short, separated motifs or segments. Fragmentation breaks a line into pieces; Klangfarbenmelodie can keep the line continuous while changing its timbre.
