Kleptoparasitism

Kleptoparasitism is the acquisition of food by one animal through stealing it from another. It occurs in both intraspecific and interspecific interactions.

Food stealing: The taking of food that another individual has obtained or is guarding. Kleptoparasitism is the ecological form of food stealing between animals.
Frigatebird: A seabird with long wings and a deeply forked tail, known for pursuing other birds to force them to drop food. Frigatebirds commonly harass food-carrying seabirds until they release their catch.
Interspecific competition: Competition for resources between individuals of different species. Theft between species is a direct way competitors acquire a shared food resource.
Food web: A network of feeding relationships linking organisms in an ecosystem. Theft redirects energy among consumers without necessarily changing who captured the food.
Interference competition: Competition in which individuals directly prevent one another from accessing a resource. A thief may displace its food-holder through direct confrontation.
Great skua: A large seabird that scavenges, preys on other birds, and steals food from them. Great skuas use pursuit and aggression to take meals from other seabirds.
Intraspecific competition: Competition for resources between members of the same species. Animals can steal food from conspecifics as well as from other species.
Group foraging: Feeding behavior in which animals search for or obtain food in groups. Group members may gain food through theft, while also facing competition from one another.
Resource defense: Behavior that secures access to a resource by excluding competitors from it. Defending a meal can reduce the chance that another animal steals it.
Spotted hyena: A large social carnivore of sub-Saharan Africa that hunts and scavenges in groups. Spotted hyenas may seize prey from other carnivores, including lions.
