Knitting

Knitting makes fabric by drawing new yarn loops through existing loops. It can be done by hand with needles or mechanically on knitting machines.

Knitted fabric: Fabric formed from intermeshing yarn loops arranged in rows and columns. The looped structure produced by knitting gives this fabric its distinctive behavior.
Yarn: A continuous strand of fibers or filaments used in knitting, weaving, and other textile crafts. Yarn supplies the strand that is formed into knitting’s interlocking loops.
Hand knitting: The formation of knitted fabric by manipulating yarn and hand-held needles. It is the manual form of the method, with stitches controlled individually.
Coptic knitting: A group of early knitted textiles associated with Coptic communities in Egypt. These surviving textiles provide evidence for early knitting in the medieval period.
Weaving: Fabric production by interlacing lengthwise warp yarns with crosswise weft yarns. Weaving interlaces crossing yarn systems, unlike knitting’s connected loops.
Knit stitch: A stitch made by pulling a new loop through an existing loop from front to back. This basic operation creates the familiar V-shaped stitches on a fabric’s right side.
Knitting needle: A slender tool used to hold stitches and form new loops in hand knitting. Needles control the live loops while each new stitch is made.
Machine knitting: The production of knitted fabric using machines that form and interlock yarn loops. Machines automate loop formation for efficient production and complex structures.
Nalbinding: A textile technique that forms loops with a needle and short lengths of yarn, rather than continuous knitting. Older looped textiles are sometimes mistaken for knitting, but nalbinding uses a different construction.
Crochet: A textile craft that uses a hook to form loops and stitches from yarn. Crochet typically builds stitches one at a time with a hook rather than interlocking rows on needles.
