Knowledge problem

The challenge of coordinating action when relevant information is dispersed, changing, and costly to communicate. It limits what any central decision-maker can know in time.

Local knowledge: Information about particular circumstances that is available to people close to them but not fully known elsewhere. The problem arises because useful facts remain with individuals facing specific, changing circumstances.
Friedrich Hayek: An Austrian-born economist and political philosopher whose work examined knowledge, markets, and social order. Hayek gave the knowledge problem its influential formulation in economic debate.
