Kōbō Abe

Kōbō Abe was a Japanese novelist, playwright, and photographer whose surreal fiction, especially The Woman in the Dunes, explores identity, confinement, and alienation.

The Woman in the Dunes: A 1962 novel by Kōbō Abe about an entomologist trapped in a sand pit with a village woman. Its shifting struggle between escape and accommodation is Abe’s most celebrated fictional case.
