Kōichi Kido

Kōichi Kido was a Japanese court official and politician who served as Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal to Emperor Hirohito from 1940 to 1945. He became a key adviser during Japan’s wartime leadership and surrender.

Hirohito: Hirohito was emperor of Japan from 1926 to 1989, including during the Second World War. As Lord Keeper, Kido advised Hirohito and helped convey the emperor’s wishes to political leaders.
Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal of Japan: The Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal was a senior Japanese court official who advised the emperor and managed the imperial seal. Kido occupied this office from 1940 until its abolition in 1945.

Class A war crimes: Class A war crimes were crimes against peace prosecuted under the Tokyo and Nuremberg tribunal charters. Kido was convicted of conspiracy to wage aggressive war and received a life sentence.
Hideki Tojo: Hideki Tojo was a Japanese general and politician who served as prime minister from 1941 to 1944. Kido supported Tojo’s appointment as prime minister, then later helped secure his removal.
Supreme War Council: The Supreme War Council was Japan’s senior wartime body for deliberating military and national policy. Kido worked through council deliberations as leaders debated whether to continue the war.
