Kola Peninsula

The Kola Peninsula is a region of northwestern Russia between the Barents and White seas, much of it north of the Arctic Circle. It includes Murmansk and the Khibiny Mountains.

Barents Sea: A marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean north of Norway and western Russia. It borders the peninsula to the north and east.
Sámi people: An Indigenous people of northern Fennoscandia and the Kola Peninsula. Sámi communities have longstanding ties to the peninsula’s lands and waters.
Murmansk Port: A major Russian seaport on the Barents Sea that remains ice-free for much of the year. Its open-water access supports commerce and Arctic shipping from the peninsula.
Kola Nuclear Power Plant: A nuclear power station near Polyarnye Zori in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. It supplies electricity across the peninsula and raises questions of nuclear safety.
Yamal Peninsula: A Russian peninsula in the Kara Sea, known for extensive natural-gas reserves. Unlike Kola’s ports and metal ores, Yamal is chiefly associated with gas extraction.
White Sea: A southern inlet of the Barents Sea enclosed by northwestern Russia. It bounds the peninsula to the southeast.
Pomors: A Russian coastal people whose traditional communities developed around the White Sea. Pomor settlement and seafaring shaped the peninsula’s southern coastal history.
Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company: A Russian mining and metallurgical company producing nickel and other metals in the Murmansk region. Its operations make the peninsula a major center of nickel production.
Lovozero Massif: A mountain massif east of the Khibiny Mountains in the Kola Peninsula. Its distinctive tundra ecosystems face pressures from mining and other land use.
Taimyr Peninsula: A large Russian peninsula extending into the Arctic Ocean in northern Siberia. It is a more remote Siberian Arctic landmass than the comparatively connected Kola Peninsula.
