Komnenian dynasty

The Byzantine imperial family that ruled from 1081 to 1185, restoring central authority and military strength under Alexios I, John II, and Manuel I.

Alexios I Komnenos: Byzantine emperor from 1081 to 1118 who founded Komnenian rule and reorganized the empire amid military crises. His seizure of the throne began the dynasty’s century-long rule.
Pronoia: A Byzantine grant of rights to collect revenue from designated land or taxpayers, often linked to military service. Pronoia became one means of supporting soldiers and rewarding loyal servants.
Battle of Dyrrhachium: A 1081 battle in which the Normans under Robert Guiscard defeated Alexios I’s Byzantine forces near Dyrrhachium. The defeat exposed the dangers Alexios faced immediately after taking power.

Macedonian dynasty: A Byzantine imperial dynasty that ruled from 867 to 1056 during a period of territorial and cultural expansion. Its long era of imperial strength preceded the political fragmentation inherited by Alexios I.
