Komnenian restoration

The recovery of Byzantine imperial power under the Komnenian dynasty, beginning with Alexios I’s accession in 1081 and reaching its height under Manuel I.

Alexios I Komnenos: Byzantine emperor from 1081 to 1118 who restored imperial authority after a period of political and military crisis. His accession began the restoration, and his policies established its dynastic and military foundations.
Battle of Dyrrhachium: A 1081 battle in which Robert Guiscard’s Normans defeated Alexios I’s Byzantine forces near Dyrrhachium. The defeat opened Alexios’s reign and exposed the military crisis his government had to overcome.
John II Komnenos: Byzantine emperor from 1118 to 1143, known for sustained military campaigns and efforts to strengthen imperial authority. He extended his father’s recovery through campaigns in Anatolia, the Balkans, and the Levant.

Manuel I Komnenos: Byzantine emperor from 1143 to 1180 who pursued ambitious diplomacy and military intervention across the Mediterranean. His reign marked the restoration’s height, as well as the strain of maintaining influence on many fronts.
