Kong Empire

The Kong Empire was a precolonial West African state centered on Kong, in present-day Côte d’Ivoire. It flourished from the eighteenth century until French conquest in 1898.

Kong: A historic town in northern Côte d’Ivoire, known as a center of trade and Islamic learning. The town gave the empire its name and served as its political and commercial center.
Trans-Saharan trade: A network of commercial routes linking North Africa with regions south of the Sahara. Kong’s merchants connected inland markets with broader trans-Saharan commercial circuits.
Sekou Wattara: An eighteenth-century ruler associated with the rise and expansion of the Kong state. His leadership is central to accounts of Kong’s emergence as a regional power.
French conquest of Kong: The French military takeover of Kong in 1898, which ended the empire’s independence. This event marks the end of the Kong Empire as a sovereign state.
Mande peoples: A group of culturally and linguistically related peoples of West Africa, including the Mandinka and Dyula. Mande-speaking Dyula communities helped establish Kong’s ruling and trading networks.
Gold trade in West Africa: The production and exchange of gold that linked West African states to regional and global markets. Gold moving through the region helped sustain Kong’s role as a commercial hub.

Dyula: A Mande-speaking Muslim trading people whose communities spread across West Africa. Dyula merchants and scholars formed a major part of Kong’s society and regional influence.
Islamic scholarship: The study and transmission of Islamic law, theology, literature, and sciences. Kong’s scholars and schools made religious learning a source of influence beyond the town.
