Kongo language

Kongo, also called Kikongo, is a Bantu language spoken by Kongo communities mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, and Angola.

Bantu languages: A large branch of the Niger–Congo language family spoken across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Kongo belongs to this branch, whose shared grammatical features help locate it among African languages.
Kongo people: A Central African people with historic communities in present-day Angola, the Republic of the Congo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kongo is the language associated with these communities, whose identities and speech span national borders.
Proto-Bantu language: The reconstructed ancestor of the Bantu languages, inferred through comparative linguistics. Kongo descends from the Bantu expansion that carried related languages through Central Africa.
Lingala: A Bantu language widely used as a lingua franca in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. Lingala is regionally prominent but distinct from Kongo, despite overlapping speakers and contact.

Teke languages: A group of Bantu languages spoken around the Congo River basin. Teke languages are neighboring Bantu languages, not varieties of Kongo.
Kikongo language varieties: The regional varieties and closely related lects associated with the Kikongo language continuum. Names such as Kikongo cover substantial regional variation across Kongo-speaking communities.
Catholic Church in the Kingdom of Kongo: The Catholic institution established in the Kingdom of Kongo through the region’s early modern Christian connections with Portugal. Christian missions used Kongo in religious teaching and translation, adding influential written and liturgical contexts.
