Königsberg

Königsberg was a historic East Prussian port city on the Baltic Sea, founded by the Teutonic Order and renamed Kaliningrad after its 1945 transfer to the Soviet Union.

Teutonic Order: A Catholic military order founded during the Crusades that ruled territories around the Baltic Sea. The order conquered the Sambian peninsula and founded Königsberg in the thirteenth century.
Duchy of Prussia: A Baltic duchy established in 1525 from the secularized lands of the Teutonic Order. Königsberg served as its capital and the site of its rulers’ court.
Immanuel Kant: An eighteenth-century German philosopher whose critical philosophy reshaped modern thought. Kant was born, worked, and died in Königsberg, where the city’s intellectual life formed his setting.
East Prussia: A former German province on the southeastern Baltic coast, separated from Germany after World War I. Königsberg was East Prussia’s capital until the province was dissolved after World War II.
