Konstantin Stanislavski

Konstantin Stanislavski (1863–1938) was a Russian actor, director, and theatre theorist who co-founded the Moscow Art Theatre and developed an influential system of actor training.

Given circumstances: The established facts, relationships, and conditions of a dramatic situation. Stanislavski asked actors to investigate these facts before deciding how a character behaves.
Active analysis: A rehearsal method that explores a play through improvisation and physical enactment before fixing detailed choices. It describes the exploratory rehearsal practice associated with Stanislavski’s later work.
Moscow Art Theatre: A Russian theatre company founded in 1898 by Konstantin Stanislavski and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. It became the principal institution where Stanislavski developed and tested his work.
