Konstantinos Kanaris

Konstantinos Kanaris (1793–1877) was a Greek naval officer and politician who became a leading commander in the Greek War of Independence and later served as prime minister.

Destruction of the Ottoman flagship at Chios: A 1822 Greek fire-ship attack that destroyed an Ottoman flagship anchored off Chios. Kanaris led the attack that killed Ottoman admiral Nasuhzade Ali Pasha.
Fire ship: A vessel deliberately set alight and directed toward enemy ships to ignite or damage them. Kanaris used fire ships as his signature weapon against anchored Ottoman vessels.
Psara: A Greek island in the Aegean Sea whose inhabitants played a major role in the War of Independence. Kanaris was born there and drew on its seafaring culture.
