Kontakion

A Byzantine poetic sermon-hymn built around an introductory prooimion and a series of stanzas, traditionally linked by a refrain and an acrostic.

Prooimion: An introductory stanza that establishes a hymn’s theme and often includes a refrain. It introduces the subject and melody before the kontakion’s longer stanza sequence.
Hymnody: The composition or singing of hymns, especially as part of religious worship. Kontakia belong to sung worship, not merely to written poetry.
Romanos the Melodist: A sixth-century Byzantine hymnographer renowned for composing kontakia. His surviving hymns are the clearest examples of the form at its early height.
