Kopet Dag

The Kopet Dag is a mountain range along the Iran–Turkmenistan border, marking part of the transition between the Iranian Plateau and Central Asia.

Alborz: A mountain range in northern Iran between the Caspian Sea and the Iranian Plateau. The Alborz continues the northern Iranian mountain arc west of the Kopet Dag.
Arabian Plate: A tectonic plate carrying the Arabian Peninsula and parts of the surrounding region. Its northward convergence helps drive deformation across northeastern Iran.
Atrek River: A river rising in northeastern Iran that flows westward toward the Caspian Sea. Its basin drains the western Kopet Dag and supports settlements near the border.
Mount Khwaja: A prominent mountain peak in the Kopet Dag range of northeastern Iran. It is among the range’s high summits and illustrates its rugged Iranian sector.
Iranian Plateau: A highland region of southwestern Asia centered on Iran and extending into neighboring countries. The Kopet Dag forms part of its northeastern margin.
Eurasian Plate: A tectonic plate comprising most of Europe and Asia. The Kopet Dag lies within the broad collision zone between Eurasia and Arabia.
Karakum Desert: A desert covering much of central Turkmenistan. The Kopet Dag’s northern slopes rise abruptly from the desert lowlands.
Kopet Dag Biosphere Reserve: A UNESCO biosphere reserve in Turkmenistan protecting ecosystems of the Kopet Dag foothills. Its protected landscapes represent the range’s biodiversity and human-environment pressures.
Central Asia: A landlocked region of Asia commonly comprising Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The mountains mark a natural transition toward Central Asia.
Continental collision: The convergence and deformation that occur when two buoyant continental plates move toward one another. Regional plate convergence compresses and uplifts the Kopet Dag.
