Köprülü era

A period of Ottoman political and military revival, usually dated 1656–1683, when grand viziers from the Köprülü family dominated government.

Köprülü Mehmed Pasha: Ottoman grand vizier from 1656 to 1661 who restored central authority and military discipline. His appointment in 1656 marks the conventional beginning of the era.
Grand vizier: The chief minister of the Ottoman Empire, responsible for administering government on the sultan’s behalf. Köprülü authority operated through this office and its control of the imperial administration.
Cretan War: A prolonged conflict between the Ottoman Empire and Venice over Crete, lasting from 1645 to 1669. Its conclusion at Candia was a major achievement of Köprülü-era military policy.
Battle of Vienna (1683): The battle on 12 September 1683 in which a relief army defeated Ottoman forces besieging Vienna. The defeat transformed the failed siege into a turning point for the empire.
Ottoman Interregnum (1648–1656): A period of unstable Ottoman government and frequent grand-vizier changes between 1648 and 1656. This political crisis preceded Köprülü Mehmed’s appointment and helps explain the demand for strong rule.
Köprülü Fazıl Ahmed Pasha: Ottoman grand vizier from 1661 to 1676 who led major campaigns and expanded imperial territory. He continued his father’s rule and oversaw the era’s greatest territorial gains.
Ottoman centralization: The strengthening of the Ottoman central government’s authority over provincial and military institutions. Köprülü policies sought to reassert the center’s control after political disorder.
Siege of Candia: The final Ottoman siege of Venetian-held Candia on Crete, ending in 1669. Its capture secured the Ottoman conquest of Crete under Köprülü Fazıl Ahmed Pasha.
Great Turkish War: A conflict from 1683 to 1699 between the Ottoman Empire and a European coalition led by the Habsburgs. It followed the Vienna defeat and reversed many Köprülü-era gains.
Köprülü family: An Ottoman political family whose members held high offices, including the grand vizierate, in the seventeenth century. The era takes its name from the family that supplied several of its leading viziers.
