Korean reunification

Korean reunification is the proposed political unification of North Korea and South Korea into one state. It remains unrealized amid military confrontation, divergent political systems, and competing visions of its terms.

Division of Korea: The separation of Korea into northern and southern political zones that became rival states. The unresolved division is the historical condition reunification would end.
Korean reunification proposals: Plans for creating one Korean state from North Korea and South Korea through political agreement or other means. These competing plans specify possible routes from division to a single state.
Kim Il Sung: The founder and first leader of North Korea, ruling from its establishment until 1994. His government established North Korea's early policy and proposals on reunification.
North Korea: A sovereign state occupying the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Its political system and official policies shape one side of the unification question.
Korean Demilitarized Zone: A heavily fortified buffer zone separating North Korea and South Korea. It embodies the military boundary a political settlement would have to address.
Korean Liberation: The end of Japanese colonial rule in Korea in 1945. Liberation preceded the occupation zones that divided the peninsula.
Confederalism: A political arrangement in which sovereign states cooperate through shared institutions while retaining substantial autonomy. A confederation offers a gradual model without immediate absorption of either state.
Kim Dae-jung: South Korean president from 1998 to 2003 and advocate of engagement with North Korea. His Sunshine Policy produced the first inter-Korean summit between the two states.
South Korea: A sovereign state occupying the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, officially the Republic of Korea. Its democratic institutions and public debate shape the other side.
Separated families of Korea: Korean families divided by the peninsula's partition and the Korean War. Family separation gives reunification a direct and enduring human dimension.
