Kosovo

Kosovo is a partially recognized state in the western Balkans, bordered by Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia. Its capital and largest city is Pristina.

Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia: A socialist federation in southeastern Europe that existed from 1945 until its dissolution in the early 1990s. Kosovo was an autonomous province within Serbia, one of Yugoslavia’s six constituent republics.

Kosovo War: An armed conflict in Kosovo from 1998 to 1999 between Yugoslav forces and the Kosovo Albanian insurgency. The war and NATO intervention transformed Kosovo’s political status and international administration.
Assembly of Kosovo: Kosovo’s unicameral legislature, responsible for passing laws and overseeing the government. The Assembly is the central elected institution of the republic.
Hashim Thaçi: A Kosovo Albanian politician who led the Kosovo Liberation Army’s political directorate and later served as president. His wartime and postwar leadership helped shape Kosovo’s path to independence.
Northern Kosovo: The Serb-majority area of Kosovo north of the Ibar River, comprising four municipalities. Its institutions and ties to Serbia have made it the sharpest internal challenge to Kosovo’s authority.
Kosovo Albanian: The Albanian language variety spoken by most ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. Albanian is one of Kosovo’s official languages and the majority community’s principal language.
