Kowloon Peninsula

A peninsula in southern Hong Kong, bounded by Victoria Harbour and the South China Sea and joined to the mainland to the north.

Victoria Harbour: A natural harbour separating Kowloon from Hong Kong Island. Its southern shoreline forms one of the peninsula’s defining boundaries.
Convention of Peking: A 1860 treaty that ceded the southern part of Kowloon to Britain. Its cession extended British Hong Kong from Hong Kong Island onto the peninsula.
Tsim Sha Tsui: A commercial and tourist district at the southern tip of the Kowloon Peninsula. Its waterfront and ferry links anchor the peninsula’s southern end.
British Hong Kong: The British-administered territory of Hong Kong from 1841 until its 1997 handover to China. Kowloon’s cession and administration expanded this territory onto the mainland shore.

Kowloon Walled City: A densely built enclave in Kowloon that persisted under unusual jurisdictional arrangements until its demolition in the 1990s. Its history reflects the peninsula’s shifting boundaries and sovereignties.
Mong Kok: A densely populated commercial district in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Its crowded streets illustrate the peninsula’s intense urban density.
Hong Kong handover: The 1997 transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China. The peninsula became part of the Special Administrative Region established at the handover.
New Territories: A region of Hong Kong north of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The peninsula connects northward to this larger region.
New Territories Lease: The 1898 agreement leasing the New Territories to Britain for 99 years. The lease brought the northern hinterland adjoining Kowloon under British administration.
