Kra Isthmus

The Kra Isthmus is the narrow land bridge in southern Thailand connecting the Malay Peninsula to mainland Southeast Asia, between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

Malay Peninsula: A long peninsula in Southeast Asia extending south from mainland Asia toward Singapore. The isthmus forms its northern connection to mainland Southeast Asia.
Thai Canal: A proposed ship canal across southern Thailand linking the Andaman Sea with the Gulf of Thailand. It is the most direct proposal to turn the isthmus into a maritime passage.
Thomas Bowrey: An English merchant and travel writer whose late seventeenth-century writings described Asian trade and geography. His account is associated with early European interest in a canal across the isthmus.
Maritime chokepoint: A narrow sea passage through which a large share of maritime traffic must pass. The isthmus's strategic value is often framed as a way to bypass a nearby chokepoint.

Gulf of Thailand: A shallow gulf in the western South China Sea, bordered by Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It lies east of the isthmus and would be the other end of a canal.
Kra Isthmus land bridge: A proposed transport corridor across southern Thailand combining ports with rail and road links. It offers a land-based alternative to digging a canal across the isthmus.
