Krishnadevaraya

Krishnadevaraya ruled the Vijayanagara Empire from 1509 to 1529. His reign combined military expansion and administrative consolidation with major patronage of Telugu and Sanskrit literature and the arts.

Battle of Raichur: A 1520 battle in which Vijayanagara forces under Krishnadevaraya defeated the Bijapur Sultanate for control of the Raichur Doab. The victory over Bijapur became the signature military success of his reign.
Allasani Peddana: A Telugu poet at Krishnadevaraya’s court, celebrated as one of the Ashtadiggajas. Peddana’s prominence illustrates the court’s support for Telugu literary culture.
Vijayanagara Empire: A South Indian empire founded in the fourteenth century and centered on the city of Vijayanagara. Krishnadevaraya’s campaigns and reforms took place within this imperial system.

Tuluva dynasty: The third ruling dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire, which governed from the late fifteenth to the mid-sixteenth century. Krishnadevaraya was the dynasty’s most prominent ruler.
Tirumala Venkateswara Temple: A major Hindu temple dedicated to Venkateswara on Tirumala hill in present-day Andhra Pradesh. Inscriptions record Krishnadevaraya’s visits and donations to the temple.
Kannada literature: Literature composed in Kannada, a Dravidian language spoken chiefly in southwestern India. His reign also belonged to a multilingual literary world, though Telugu works dominate its courtly legacy.
