Kuban River
The Kuban is a river in southwestern Russia that flows from the Caucasus Mountains across the North Caucasus and drains into the Sea of Azov.
Mount Elbrus: A dormant volcano in the Caucasus Mountains and the highest peak in Europe. The Kuban’s headwaters rise on the northwestern slopes of this mountain.
Kuban Hydroelectric Power Station: A hydroelectric power station on the Kuban River near Karachayevsk. It converts regulated river flow into electricity.
North Caucasus: The northern slopes and foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, a diverse region of southwestern Russia. Most of the Kuban’s course and basin lie within this region.
Kuban River floods: High-water events on the Kuban River caused by rainfall, snowmelt, or reservoir releases. Flood risk affects settlements and farmland along the river and its tributaries.
Kuban Delta: A low-lying network of channels and wetlands where the Kuban reaches the Sea of Azov. The river divides into distributaries before entering the sea.
Kuban–Krasnodar Canal: An irrigation canal system that distributes water from the Kuban in Krasnodar Krai. Canals carry river water to farmland beyond the natural banks.
Caucasus Mountains: A mountain system between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, spanning parts of Russia and neighboring countries. The mountains feed the Kuban and shape its upper course.
Krasnodar: A major city in southwestern Russia, located on the Kuban River. The river has shaped the city’s water supply, flood planning, and regional growth.
Sea of Azov: A shallow inland sea connected to the Black Sea through the Kerch Strait. The Kuban’s waters ultimately drain into this sea.
Krasnodar Reservoir: A large reservoir on the Kuban River near Krasnodar, created in the 1970s. It stores water for irrigation, flood management, and municipal use.
