Kūkai

Kūkai (774–835), also known by the posthumous title Kōbō Daishi, was a Japanese Buddhist monk, scholar, and calligrapher who established Shingon Buddhism in Japan.

Shingon Buddhism: A Japanese school of esoteric Buddhism founded by Kūkai and centered on ritual, mantra, and awakening in this body. Kūkai organized this tradition in Japan after studying esoteric Buddhism in China.
