Kula ring

The Kula ring is a ceremonial exchange network linking island communities in the Massim region of Papua New Guinea. Participants circulate shell valuables in opposite directions, building relationships and prestige through repeated exchanges.

Soulava: A long necklace of red shell discs exchanged clockwise among Kula partners. Soulava necklaces travel in one direction around the Kula network.
Bronisław Malinowski: A Polish-British anthropologist known for participant observation in the Trobriand Islands. His fieldwork brought Kula exchange to wide scholarly attention.
Gift economy: An economic system in which giving and receiving create social obligations and relationships. Kula valuables move through gifts rather than ordinary purchases.
Kula voyage: A planned sea journey undertaken to visit partners and exchange Kula valuables. Voyages carry participants and valuables between islands in the network.
