Kunihiko Kodaira

Kunihiko Kodaira (1915–1997) was a Japanese mathematician who transformed the study of complex manifolds and algebraic surfaces, earning the Fields Medal in 1954.

Complex manifold: A space locally modeled on complex Euclidean space, with holomorphic coordinate changes. These spaces were the central setting for Kodaira’s geometric research.
Kodaira vanishing theorem: A theorem stating that certain higher cohomology groups vanish for positive line bundles on compact complex manifolds. This theorem exemplifies how curvature positivity constrains algebraic geometry.
