Kunqu

Kunqu is a classical Chinese musical-theater tradition that developed around Kunshan. It combines refined singing, poetic texts, instrumental music, and stylized movement.

Kunshan: A city in Jiangsu province, China, associated with the development of Kunqu. The tradition takes its name from the region where its style emerged.
Wei Liangfu: A sixteenth-century musician credited with refining the vocal style associated with Kunqu. His musical reforms helped shape Kunqu’s distinctive singing tradition.
The Peony Pavilion: A 1598 Kunqu play by Tang Xianzu about Du Liniang, whose love persists beyond death. Its lyrical scenes and enduring love story became emblematic of Kunqu drama.

The Washing of Silk: A Ming-dynasty Kunqu play by Liang Chenyu, also known as Huansha ji. Its success helped spread the emerging Kunqu style beyond its home region.
