Knowra Kurdistan Kurdistan Kurdistan is a historical and cultural region associated with Kurdish populations across parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. Its boundaries are contested and do not correspond to a single sovereign state.
Kurdish people : An Iranian-speaking ethnic group concentrated in parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, with diasporic communities worldwide. Kurdistan’s regional identity is closely tied to Kurdish communities and their varied histories.
Iraqi Kurdistan : The Kurdish-majority region of northern Iraq, constitutionally recognized as the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It is the region’s clearest example of constitutionally recognized territorial autonomy.
Treaty of Zuhab : A 1639 agreement between the Ottoman and Safavid empires that established a lasting boundary in their contested frontier region. The Ottoman–Safavid frontier helped shape political divisions across Kurdish-inhabited lands.
Kurdistan Workers' Party : A Kurdish militant and political organization founded in Turkey in 1978, also known as the PKK. The organization’s name is often mistaken for the region itself.
Kurdish language : A group of Northwestern Iranian languages spoken by Kurds, including Kurmanji and Sorani. Kurdish languages help sustain cultural ties across the region’s state borders.
Kurdistan Region : The autonomous federal region in northern Iraq governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government. Its official institutions give one part of Kurdistan a defined administrative form.
Treaty of Sèvres : A 1920 treaty that proposed postwar arrangements for the Ottoman Empire, including a process for possible Kurdish autonomy. Its provisions became a lasting reference point in debates over Kurdish self-determination.
Kurdistan Regional Government : The governing body of Iraq’s constitutionally recognized Kurdistan Region. This specific Iraqi institution is not a government for the entire historical region.
Kurdish nationalism : Political movements advocating Kurdish self-determination, autonomy, or statehood. Nationalist projects have shaped competing ideas of Kurdistan’s political future.
Kurdistan Province : A province in western Iran, one of several Iranian provinces with substantial Kurdish populations. The Iranian province shares the regional name but is not equivalent to all of Kurdistan.
