Kuril–Kamchatka Trench

The Kuril–Kamchatka Trench is a deep oceanic trench in the northwest Pacific, formed as the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Okhotsk Plate along the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka.

Subduction: The descent of one tectonic plate beneath another at a convergent plate boundary. The Pacific Plate sinks beneath the Okhotsk Plate, creating the trench.
1963 Kuril Islands earthquake: A great earthquake that ruptured part of the Kuril subduction zone on October 13, 1963. This major rupture illustrates the trench’s capacity to generate great earthquakes.
Oceanic trench: A long, narrow seafloor depression formed where one tectonic plate bends and descends beneath another. The Kuril–Kamchatka feature is a prominent example of this landform.
1952 Kamchatka earthquake: A magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Kamchatka on November 4, 1952, that generated a Pacific-wide tsunami. Its rupture demonstrates the scale of earthquakes on the northern part of this subduction margin.

Okhotsk Plate: A tectonic plate covering the Sea of Okhotsk and adjacent parts of northeastern Asia. It forms the overriding side of the trench’s subduction boundary.
Pacific Ring of Fire: A belt of frequent earthquakes and volcanoes surrounding much of the Pacific Ocean. The trench is one segment of this wider zone of subduction and volcanism.
