Kurt Goldstein

Kurt Goldstein (1878–1965) was a German neurologist and psychiatrist whose clinical work with brain-injured patients informed a holistic theory of organismic functioning.

Organismic theory: An approach that explains living systems through the organized activity of the whole organism. Goldstein’s central framework treats each ability as part of an organism’s total response to its environment.
Aphasia: An acquired impairment of language caused by damage to brain networks supporting communication. Goldstein studied how language loss affected a patient’s whole conduct, not speech alone.
Adhémar Gelb: A German psychologist who collaborated with Goldstein on studies of brain-injured patients. Their joint case studies connected clinical observation with a theory of organized behavior.
